With many companies now beginning to migrate to WebSphere 8.0 or 8.5 it is a good to look at what has changed in terms of programming in these new environments. Since both versions support Java EE 6, probably the most significant release of the Java EE platform to date, it will be important to know how to leverage the new technologies available. Besides looking at the programming APIs involved, we will also look at some of the improved development tool choices available. With the release of the free WebSphere Developer Tools for Eclipse from IBM and the release of the “Liberty profile” for a lightweight development server there are some good opportunities to stay with the robust WebSphere platform but at the same time address issues that have made it difficult to do WebSphere development.
